Becky's blog, Sketchy Styles has quickly become one of my daily reads. I met her at Blogpodium, checked out her blog and was instantly hooked. I'm so excited to share her fave find today!
Favourite Thrifted Item:
My rattan console table
Where You Bought The Piece:
Hahaha! No buying necessary! This diamond in the rough was waiting in the trash heap for a sad journey to debris oblivion. It was terrific happenstance that I spotted it across the parking lot and saved it from a sorry fate.
What drew you to the piece:
At first it was the simple fact that it was a console table and I’d just identified a need in my new apartment for a console table. Then I looked closer and realized the materials were rattan and wicker. Neither of which are on my top ten list of favourites but the overall shape and design were so winning I couldn’t turn away. So I stood amongst the heaps of garbage and began daydreaming what it’d look like with a coat of paint and a good scrub. Side note: I musta looked pretty weird to my new neighbours…
Describe any work you did to give it a new life:
The timing of the project couldn’t have been any worse. I was in the middle of a marathon day of unpacking. I was set to host a big holiday party the next day. I needed to get my place in some semblance of order. And what did I do? Shoved everything aside and embarked upon an on-the-spot furniture facelift. (Wise decision?) So you’ll understand when I say I didn’t bother with a lot of prep. Besides the surface was so rough I didn’t think the paint would need much help sticking. I removed the glass and give it a good scrub. Then I used my heavy duty exacto knife to remove the rattan from the top (it was torn anyway). Once that was removed the table immediately looked less ratty and dated. The structural bones had been exposed and it took on a whole new feel. Then I used leftover paint from my kitchen cabinets and painted the entire piece. After it dried I popped the glass back in and booyah – instant awesome!
How Do You Use It:
The table is a focal feature in my living room as one of the first pieces you see when you walk in. It makes a great statement. Unfortunately it doesn’t offer great storage but I improvised by adding white storage boxes below (which also serve to hide the ugly heating box beyond). I like to rotate out the centre display by adding different colour touches or seasonal accessories. But my favourite feature is the framed photo of my kid at one end and me at the other. I like to think our combined gorgeousness enhance the table's charm! :)
PS. It’s also makes a great impromptu buffet table for parties!
Can you believe this amazing find? This is what dumpster dreams are made of! Thanks so much for sharing today, Becky!
