Thrifted Thursday with Julie of Elliven Studio

Elliven Studio, Thrifted Thursday Happy Thrifted Thursday!  I'm so happy to have Julie of Elliven Studio here today.  As soon as I laid my eyes on her home tour I knew I had to feature her favourite thrifted find.  Her home is the perfect combination of old and new and you all know how much I love a good mashup.  So here it is:

Favourite Thrifted Item:

To be honest, it was a toss up between our dining room set (six chairs, table, hutch & sideboard) and a gorgeous white console that has amazing carving and a layer of gold leafing that is peeking through where the white paint is chipping off (I know, so amazing, right?!).  But because the dining room was such a wonderful find and the price was out of this world, I'm going with it.

Where You Bought The Piece:

I found the set on kijiji.  It was being sold by a vendor at an Antique Market in Kingston.

What drew you to the piece:

We have a good size dining room, so we really wanted to fill the space and take advantage of the fact that we could easily fit a large table.  A table the size we were looking for would have been pretty expensive new and I wasn't having any luck finding a vintage table that was larger than 70"-80".  This one is 98" with all three leaves in, so the minute I saw that, I had to go and see it in person.  I loved that the listing was for an entire set too, not easy to come by. Then there was the price, would you believe we got all of the pieces for $650?!

Describe any work you did to give it a new life:

We were pretty lucky in that we didn't have to do anything to fix any of the pieces up immediately.  One thing that is on my to do list is sourcing new hardware.  I am not a fan of the existing hardware and I'm now down to only one functioning pull on the upper drawer of the sideboard (which extends the entire width of the piece).  We will eventually have to re-stain the entire set, but that can definitely wait a few years.

How Do You Use It:

Right now, the hutch is used to display my favourite white ceramics and our silverware, the sideboard currently showcases some crystal that we inherited from hubs Grandmother and I also use it to store our holiday decor and some other odds and ends. I'm trying to find a set of lamps to place on the sideboard as well.  We usually eat in the dining room for holidays or when we have guests over for dinner.  We have moved the chairs that came with the set into the kitchen, I love the way that they look with our harvest table, so now I'm on the hunt for the perfect chairs.

I was drawn to the curves around the top and bottom of the chair and I was impressed with what great shape the caning was in. And they are super comfy to boot! In my book, they were diamonds in the rough.

I put a lot of work into these puppies - sanding, painting and reupholstering them. They sealed my reupholstery addiction for sure.

Thrifted Thursday With Mamarazzi

So I was thinking the other day, #ThriftedThursday just wouldn't be complete without featuring the person who introduced me to the thrifted life: Mamarazzi. For those of you who know me or have been following my blog since its inception, you will know my Mom is quite the queen of fab finds. She always seems to find something great and if you want solid proof, make sure to check out this post and this post.

Favourite thrifted item: Solid Wood Dining Table with Metal Legs

Where is this piece from?

I found this solid wood table at Restore (Habitat). I was so happy to find this piece, the label even reads 'Made in Italy'. This table also came with 2 wooden chairs (which are put away in the garage for now). I thought it was a great find for $150.00. The metal chairs were actually found at a Thrift Store before finding the table and my husband and I realized that the table would be perfect with these two chairs, to complete the set. We decided against using the 2 original wooden chairs in order to create more interest and Amy suggested we reupholster the chairs with something graphic to give the space a more modern feel. But I'm sure I will find some good use for those extra 2 chairs someday soon.

What drew you to the piece?

The shape of the legs and the size of the table top which was a perfect fit for my banquette; wasn't too small or too big. The craftmanship is quite amazing. The best part is that my 2 chairs can be tucked all the way in, creating a clean look when not in use.

What work did you do to give it new life?

We stripped the paint off the table top, sanded and stained a darker shade. The original was yellow and I wanted to bring out the natural grain of the wood. We then gave it a coat of clear varnish for protection. It made the grain really shine through and gave a great contrast complementing the black metal legs.

How do you use this piece in your home?

We use it as a dining table, computer table and my grand kids do their painting here too since they can sit beside each other on the banquette. This table is quite versatile, you can also put it outside on the patio as an extra party table. I'm pretty sure I will be using this table for a long time, and maybe pass it on to the next generation.

Excuse my messy hair in this photo, this was taken at my Mom's retirement party. When she's not watching her grandchildren, guess where she's at? The THRIFT STORE. Thanks so much for sharing your fave thrifted find with us, Mom! The banquette was actually designed and built by my Dad and if you haven't already seen the before and after shots, you can check it out here.

Happy almost weekend everyone! xoxo

Thrifted Thursday Series

It's time for a new series, peeps! I've been an avid thrifter since my teenage years (Mamarazzi taught me well) so naturally, this series is very exciting for me. I will be sharing the fabulous thrifty finds of some of my favourite bloggers. Pieces from good ol' thrift stores, flea markets, even Kijiji and Craigslist. So make sure you follow along every Thursday to see the unique items that have found a new life in these bloggers homes!

I’m going to kick things off with Laura Collins, a decorator and stylist from Toronto. Her and her partner share a beautiful 1920’s townhouse in Cabbagetown which is totally magazine worthy. After you check out these photos you will quickly see why. Beautiful colours which are all on trend right now and a mixture of modern and vintage style which I love.

Fave Thrifted Find: Vintage Glass Table with Brass & Lucite Legs

Where is this piece from? I purchased this piece from Kijiji, I had my eye on it for several months however it was located really far away (who knew brass and lucite could be found in the countryside!) I finally kept at the opportunity as the price decreased- and it fit seamlessly into our living space.

What drew you to this piece? I am a HUGE fan of retro pieces that incorporate modern elements into their design. I knew I wanted a glass top table, that was of this scale- the bonus was finding an original custom made brass capped lucite leg piece. Looks incredible with the Moroccan shag rug. It really tied our space together, it grounds all of the other pieces.

How do you use this piece in your home? I use it to display my coffee table books (I have a collection), and pieces I have thrifted over the years. I love vintage ashtrays, brass figures, and sea inspired decorative objects.

What an amazing find Laura! Thanks so much for sharing your favourite piece with us. Be sure to check out Laura's blog here to see what other loveliness she cooks up on the regular.

The Junction Flea

Ain't nothin' like a good ol' flea market to get you up early on a Sunday morning. Armed with my camera and dressed in way too many layers, my Mom and I made our way towards our first flea market of the year - The Junction Flea. I scored an AMAZING find but you'll have to make it to the end to see what I found!

I LOVED the vendors! Despite the cold winds, rain and hail they were all super friendly and nice. I also loved the booth styling and little details. I'm talking custom trailers, pennant flags and some really pretty signage. Needless to say, I went a little camera happy so I hope you enjoy the photos!. If you're thinking of checking it out, the Junction Flea takes place on the second Sunday of every month, the next one being June 9th. You can also check out their website here.

Here are a few stores that were in attendance: Bright Brown Vintage, Reservoir Vintage, World Headquarters, Tattered and Torn and Manual Labour Coffee.

Oh, and here's the best part. My fab find: a beautiful and bright mosaic side table for the balcony. I spotted this right away because of the colours. I love the tapered legs as well. And for $35? C'mon!

This gorgeous table has really become the jumping off point for my balcony. I knew I wanted to incorporate bright colours and this will help pull everything together. I can't wait to get working on it! Have a great Monday all!
