A + D | Our Wedding Day

tara-mcmullen-photography-toronto-wedding-loveonsunday I'm so excited to finally share some photos from our wedding day, I've been meaning to do it for months now!  The weeks leading up to the big day were truly memorable.  Late nights putting invitations together and creating succulent centrepieces...all with my favourite people.  I feel so blessed to have such handy and resourceful parents who helped me build everything from the custom centrepieces (which my dad built by hand from scrap pallet wood) to my Mom creating all the flower arrangements.

Merry Magazine and A Holiday Centrepiece

merry magazine Happy Monday!  Today I am SO excited to share with you the launch of Merry.  An online holiday magazine created by Melissa of The Sweet Escape.  Whether you're into traditional or modern decor, handmade or vintage, we're hoping these pages will inspire you to try something new or encourage you to get crafty this holiday season.  Myself and 15 other bloggers have been busy creating, styling and photographing our projects and we hope you love what you see.  Check out the Merry Mag here.

This holiday season, I wanted to create a centrepiece that combined organic textures with geometric design.  During a walk one afternoon, I picked up some branches which I thought were so beautiful.  They were so worn out and weathered but the texture really caught my eye.

I placed them in a glass vase and held them in place with some rocks.  And since I love white, I decided to fold several origami gems (I used these templates from minieco) and hung them from the branches.

Since my table is a 6-seater, I've always had a difficult time trying to find the right centrepiece to fill the space.  I love how large it is, it's the perfect focal point for my dining room.

Custom Name Art

Happy Hump Day!  Today I wanted to share a present I made for a very dear girlfriend, Kristen.  Her daughter celebrated her 1st birthday this past saturday and I wanted to create something that both her and her daughter could keep for years to come.  Custom name art for the nursery! custom name art

Kristen is a crafty lady herself so I knew she would appreciate something homemade and girly.  I decided to go with a pale pink to match her baby girl's bedroom.  I purchased two white frames and created a design to fit within the matte of the frame.

The first frame spells her daughters name, Alannah.  The second frame is a placeholder waiting for the perfect photo from her birthday party.  I thought this would be the perfect keepsake for little Alannah.

And here is the princess herself on her special day.  Isn't she adorable?

Can we talk about this sweet table?  It was created by Kristen FROM SCRATCH!  Can you tell this lady's got skills?  She made the cake, the cupcakes, the cream puffs, cake pops, personalized tags and wrappers...pretty much everything you see on this table.  Funny how my name art matches the colours on this table.  I told you she loves pink!

If you live in the GTA and ever need a cake or pastries, this is the girl you need to call.  She's fun to work with and makes everything with love, hence her business name Sugar Love Confections.   You can check out her Facebook page here and don't forget to like and become a fan, you could win yourself some free cupcakes! xo

Thrifted Thursday with Tanya of Dans le Townhouse

I'm always impressed with couples who tackle fixer uppers. The ones who pour their own blood, sweat and tears into making their house a home. My patience wears thin just stripping furniture (hence the delay on my poor Louis), so I really admire Tanya for having the guts to DIY her entire house.  I couldn't be more excited to have Tanya from Dans le Townhouse here today, sharing her favourite thrifted find...

I couldn’t pick a favorite thrifted item! I’m an avid thrifter, estate-sale junky, and yard-saler, so I’ve found quite a few gems I love. I’ve stumbled across some great mid-century pieces, turned a thrifted microwave stand into a play kitchen and even found some cool art and accessories. In the end, I picked a find that, with a little paint, never ceases to make me smile! Plus, it’s a pretty easy thrift store or yard sale item to come by, for anyone who likes the project.

Favourite Thrifted Item: Ornate Mirror

Where you bought the piece from:

I bought this ornate frame at a yard sale for $5.00.

What drew you to the piece:

It’s nothing special, but I loved the oval shape, scale and price!

Describe any work you did to give it new life:

I gave it a coat of primer, then painted it with some leftover pale turquoise latex paint. Next I stenciled on a little note that I need to remind myself every day.

How you use/display it:

I’m in the process of moving so everything is jumbled in the townhouse, but I’m planning on putting this mirror in my front hallway so guests can be reminded too!

What a great find!  And that stenciled message makes the piece even more beautiful; a perfect daily reminder.   You can check out the entire DIY here.  Thanks so much for sharing your thrifted find with us, Tanya!  If you guys love DIY's and mid-century furniture, you need to check out her blog! And by the way, she's in the process of moving to her dreamhouse, how cool and exciting is that?!

From Inspiration to Creation

Happy Friday Everyone! A couple of weeks ago I decided to join Kisha's 2nd Annual Pinterest Challenge, From Inspiration to Creation. And since I have several items on my DIY to-do list, I thought this would be the perfect kick in the butt to get me going!

Since re-arranging my bedroom, I've been left with NO room for a bedside table on my side of the bed. How is that fair?! So my solution is to create some cool looking sconces. I've been inspired by these versions:

Copper pipe wall sconce from Camille Styles:

FRÄCK Hack from Manhattan Nest:

Or sconce with EKBY bracket created by Jenny Haus, featured on Poppytalk:

So some kind of mish mash of these 3 styles would make me so very happy. I have the entire month to complete 2 of these babies so I'm guessing that's more than enough time! Have you ever created a light fixture or done any similar DIY's?

Four other ladies will also be doing it up for the challenge so feel free to check out what projects have inspired them:

Have a great weekend everyone! xoxo

Weekend Fun

How was everyone's weekend? I hope everyone got outside to enjoy the amazing weather! My weekend was filled with softball, baseball, family and of course some kind of creative project thrown into the mix. My boyfriend and cousins play on a softball team and I just love watching their games when the weather is beautiful outside. Also, who wouldn't want to watch with this little cutie by your side? My cousin's niece Taylor was all ready to play with her own pink glove and baseball! Their team is called the Blue Jays, and how appropriate that we went to watch the real Jays play right after? The Jays lost but I still love them. #gojaysgo!

And I know I promised no more Louis updates but I'm sad to say that the upholstery fabric I wanted from Designer Fabrics is on backorder and they don't even know when they will be receiving more of it! So if any of you bloggers/DIYers are reading this, can you please help a girl out and recommend any other fabric stores that would sell some nice upholstery velvet? If I can't find anything similar to what I really, really want then I will have to go with my second choice, *SIGH*. As you can see I got my wonderful and super-sweet BF to help out with the Louis stripping and we got a lot accomplished. Thanks love :) Please note: I MADE him wear those safety glasses. Those staples have a mind of their own!

My parents also have this trestle coffee table that they're in the midst of stripping and we were throwing out some ideas on how to re-work it.

Paint it white? Paint it black? Leave it natural? We were even toying with idea of separating the 2 pieces and using the base to make a bench and the top as a separate coffee table with some modern legs. What do you think? Happy Monday Everyone! xoxo

My Nursery Board on Bijou and Boheme and The Banquette Reveal!

This is turning out to be a great week. First, I'm super excited to have my nursery board featured on Christine Dovey's Blog, Bijou and Boheme. For those of you who haven't visited her blog yet, now is your chance so check out my board here. I absolutely love her style. Also, I just couldn't wait for Friday to share the much anticipated reveal of my parents banquette and dining area. So I'm sharing them now! Do you remember what it looked like before? Here's a reminder...

Talk about dark and dreary, right? It was just wrong in SO MANY WAYS. When my parents first mentioned they wanted to update their dining area and build a banquette my imagination ran wild! We researched inspiration photos, looked at fabric options and I even did a small 'in progress' update here. My parents did a fantastic job with the banquette and scored an AMAZING solid wood table that needed just a little bit of refinishing. The original colour of the table was a hideous orange so it was sanded and stained with Miniwax Dark Walnut. The 2 chairs were a Value Village steal for $6 each and they managed to quickly reupholster those with some great fabric. Here's a rundown of the costs:

diy banquette

$533 for a banquette AND a dining room update? That's pretty amazing! I'm so happy with the way this turned out, it's now my favourite spot in my parents house.
